Is therapy for me?

Short answer is Yes. Therapy is for anyone who happens to have thoughts and feelings. People enter therapy for various reasons including managing emotional distress like depression and anxiety, improving relationships, adapting to major life transitions, or simply to enhance their overall well-being. If you believe you could use some help sorting out how you feel or would like some new ways to cope more effectively with life’s challenges or you wish to grow personally then therapy can help.

No, that is NOT true. While many people come to therapy with all sorts of problems, many also come not because they feel something wrong but because they want to get to know themselves better, to ponder the meaning of life or to unleash their creative and authentic selves. As a society, we need to change the way we think and talk about therapy. Ultimately, therapy is a creative process whereby you will learn how to build a healthy relationship with self and others.

Therapy can provide support, improve your ability to cope with stress, enhance your communication skills, increase your emotional resilience, and provide you with strategies to manage symptoms of mental health conditions. It’s a collaborative effort that can lead to significant improvements in your overall quality of life and mental well-being.

Seeking therapy doesn’t mean you can’t handle problems on your own; it means you’re taking a proactive step towards enhancing your mental health. Therapy provides professional insights and strategies that can lead to lasting, positive changes, offering a different perspective that might be hard to achieve on your own.

I encourage you to try again with a different therapist and / or a different style of therapy. When I choose a therapist, I always go with my gut – never by location, cost or whether a rebate is available. Good therapy is worth its weight in gold and many people travel to the other side of town for the right therapist. It is perfectly acceptable to interview a few therapists before making a decision. Also, therapy takes a commitment in relation to time, money and relationship with self – so the timing needs to be right! If you are unhappy at any stage with your therapist, it is worth sharing your feelings so that you and the therapist can work through it together.

Somewhere along the way you have learnt that you are not worth it. When we are struggling with toxic shame, low self-worth and a sense of feeling flawed at the core, it is difficult to see that we are indeed worth investing in ourselves. It’s important that we don’t believe everything we think! It could be one of our subpersonalities such as the ‘inner critic’ or the ‘internal saboteur’. You are worth it and the point is you. Therapy can help you to realise this.

Talking to a therapist is different because a therapist provides an unbiased, impartial, and non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings. Unlike friends or family, a therapist has professional training to help you approach your situation in new ways, teach you new skills, and gain different perspectives. Therapy is also confidential, ensuring your privacy. Additionally, therapists help you process your emotions and develop your own solutions without giving direct advice, which can be especially beneficial for addressing complex or difficult issues and building lifetime independence.

Finding a therapist you really feel strongly connected with is the foundation of any good therapy. It typically takes about 3 sessions to determine if it’s a good fit. A therapist is a good fit if you feel comfortable, respected, and understood in their presence. During your initial sessions, consider whether you feel at ease talking to them and if they listen attentively without judgement. Pay attention to their communication style and whether it aligns with your preferences. A good therapist will respect your pace and boundaries while providing the support and guidance you need. Trust your instincts—if you feel a sense of rapport and trust, it’s a positive sign that the therapist may be a good match for you. Remember, it’s okay to try a few therapists before finding the right one for you.

It’s important to feel comfortable with your therapist. If you don’t feel a connection or sense of trust, consider discussing your concerns with your therapist. If the discomfort persists, it may be helpful to seek a different therapist who better suits your needs.

Absolutely. Confidentiality is a fundamental part of therapy. Therapists are bound by professional ethics to protect your privacy and cannot share the content of your sessions with anyone without your explicit consent. Only in extreme cases, like threats to safety, might certain information need to be disclosed, and even then, it’s handled with utmost care to maintain your privacy.

Absolutely. We offer both telephone and video counselling sessions to clients who prefer online to in-person appointments. You can call us to schedule or book an online counseling session here.

In the first session you might feel awkward or nervous – this is normal! During your first session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your background, and any specific concerns or goals you may have. This initial session helps the therapist understand your needs and allows for them to start developing a personalised treatment plan. The therapist will usually discuss their professional ethics of how they work. It is also an opportunity for you to get to know the therapist.

To prepare for your first therapy session, consider what issues you’d like to address and any goals you have for therapy. Be ready to discuss your personal history and current challenges. It’s also helpful to write down any questions you have for your therapist.

The frequency of therapy sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Typically, sessions are held weekly or bi-weekly, but your therapist will work with you to determine the best schedule for your progress.

Individual therapy sessions typically last 45 minutes, while couples and family sessions last 50 and 60 minutes respectively.
